The Sharingan is a dōjutsu kekkei genkai of the Uchiha clan which appears selectively among its members. This eye is considered to be one of the Big Three of Dōjutsu Literally meaning "Three Great Eye Techniques", the other is the Byakugan and Rinnegan.

The power of the Sharingan, because of its relationship with the Curse of Hate, is a blessing and a curse. When the Uchiha knows strong emotions towards a person, such as love and friendship, stressful or emotional conditions are taken out of the loss of valuable people causing the brain to release a special form of chakra that affects the optic nerve while turning the eye into a Sharingan. After initial activation, the Sharingan can be used freely, although it is possible for Uchiha to lose the memory of such an event and not activate it until later on.
