Astrology is the science of studying the motion of celestial bodies, including their positions at one time and predictions of their positions in the future. Based on modern definitions, astronomy is classified as observational astronomy, specifically related to the position and circulation of the sun and moon. This science developed observation techniques (rukyat) and calculation techniques (hisab) which became the initial basis for the history of the development of modern astronomy. The science of astronomy is a very important Islamic heritage for astronomy.

Based on the interests of Muslims to determine the time of worship and the direction of the Qibla, the science of astronomy developed rapidly in the early days of Islamic civilization. The need to know the beginning of Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dzulhijjah, as well as other months, encouraged Muslim scientists to develop the science of hisab, namely the science of calculating the circulation of the moon and sun from long-term rukyat experience.

Knowledge of the apparent daily movement of the sun is also needed to determine the beginning of prayer times. Calculation of the position of celestial bodies developed in line with developments in measuring the direction of the Qibla using spherical trigonometry, namely calculating angular distances on a sphere to be applied to the celestial sphere and the earth. Spherical trigonometry calculations are very useful in determining the Qibla direction.

The results of observations and calculation formulas for the position and circulation of the sun and moon were recorded, translated and explained by astronomical scholars. The book has been studied from generation to generation. In its initial form, the formula was written in the form of a table and the calculations used simple mathematical operations.

These tables make it easy for users, but difficult to trace the origins of the underlying complex calculations. This is different from modern formulas which use complicated mathematical formulas, but anyone who studies them can trace the origins of these formulas by deriving them based on basic formulas that are generally known.

Astronomers used to pass down how to use these tables, but not many taught how to get these tables. Many scholars in many regions (including in Betawi) have mastered the science of astronomy like this and taught their students how to use these books. Unfortunately, the way to develop such tables does not appear to be scientifically derived. This is the reason for the stagnation in the development of the method.
