The Book of Arbain Nawawi or Al-Arba'in An-Nawawiyah (Arabic: الأربعون النووية) is a hadith book which contains 42 selected hadiths compiled by Imam Nawawi. Arba'in means 40 but actually there are 42 hadiths contained in this popular hadith book. This book, together with the Riyadus Salihin book, is considered the most famous work of Imam Nawawi and is accepted by Muslims around the world. This book is a favorite among teachers of Islamic studies and students at Islamic boarding schools to start memorizing the hadiths of the Prophet before moving on to larger books.

The scholars used to sharpen their understanding and to make it easier to teach them, usually compiling books of collections or summaries of a religious problem. So that in fact Imam Nawawi was not the first nor was he the only one who made the Book of Arbain, such as the Book of Arbain Al-Ajurri, Al-Baihaqi, Ash-Shabuni, Al-Hakim, Ad-Daruquthni, Ath-Tabari, As-Suyuthi, Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani and others. Even so, the Arbain Book compiled by Imam Nawawilah which is widely known and popular is studied to this day, so to distinguish it from other Arbain books, it is called Al-Arba'in An-Nawawiyah (Book of Arbain by Imam An-Nawawi).

The basis for the book "Arbain An-Nawawiyah" is the book "Al-Ahadith Al-Kulliyah" which was dictated by Imam Al-Hafizh Abu Amr bin Ash-Shalah, which is a collection of 26 hadiths which are dense and concise. Then Imam Nawawi fulfilled it into 42 hadiths and named it Al-Arba'in, the original title of his book: Al-Arba'un Fi Mabani Al-Islam wa Qowa'idi Al-Ahkam.

Imam Nawawi actually chose the hadiths that became the foundation of Islamic teachings in compiling his Arba'in Book. There are several reasons that show the importance of the position of the Book of Hadith "Al-arba'in An-Nawawiyah", including covering most of the affairs and needs of Muslims in the world and in the hereafter, both regarding aspects of aqidah, law, sharia, muamalah and morality.

This collection of Hadiths “Al-arba'in An-Nawawiyah” is also a collection of selected hadiths, namely jawami'ul kalim which has the advantage of being brief and concise. The hadiths are a single unit which is the scope of Islamic teachings, either half of it, or a third or a quarter of it and is widely used by scholars to teach Muslims and has even become the mainstay in providing an understanding of Islamic teachings so that some scholars are concerned with these hadiths and then teach them in more detail.
