What is Sundal?

Sundal is a delicious, wholesome snack made with steamed or boiled chickpeas (garbanzo beans) or lentils, often tempered with mustard seeds, urad dal beans, spices, red chillies, coconut, or other ingredients. Many varieties exist throughout India. It is a healthy, high-protein, low-fat dish, and also makes a great appetizer or side-dish.

Sundal is an important dish prepared every day during Navratri for prasadam or neivedhyam (offering to God) after puja, and is distributed to friends, relatives, and all those who come to see the Golu display. A different type of sundal may be prepared for each day.

What is Navratri?

Navratri (or Navaratri) is a festival dedicated to the worship of the Hindu Goddess Shakti or Durga. The word Navaratri means "nine nights" in Sanskrit. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Devi Shakti are worshiped and the divine feminine who gives life to all things is honored.
