In 1866 the publishing house Richard Bentley (English) Russian. the first separate edition of The Horseman without a Head, The Headless Horseman, was written in 1865 and based on the author's adventures in America. The novel The Horseman without a Head occurs in the fifties of the nineteenth century in the border areas state of Texas. The rich planter Woodley Poindexter with his family, consisting of a son, daughter and nephew, moves from the state of Louisiana to his new home, the Casa del Corvo.

Having lost their way on the scorched plain on the way to their new hacienda (asiende), the Poindexter family gets to know Maurice Gerald, a Mustang living near the military fort of Inge, a native of northern Ireland.
